"In difficult times, fantasy and escape are key." Alexander McQueen grew up in London's East End and left school at 15 to become a tailor's apprentice on Savile Row in Mayfair. At 22, he enrolled in the prestigious MA at Central Saint Martins and changed the course of fashion after presenting his graduation collection in 1992 (which was bought on the spot by the influential fashion stylist Isabella Blow). McQueen was defiant in his views on creativity: 'Give me time and I'll revolutionise', women: 'I design clothes because I don't want women to look innocent and naive... I want people to be afraid of the women I dress', and craft: 'You have to know the rules to break them. That's why I'm here, to break the rules but keep the tradition".
